Potato And Bengal Gram Dal Kootu

Potatoes
- 4
•
Bengal gram dal
- ¼ cup
•
Tamarind
- lime size
•
Salt
- as required
•
Jaggery
- as required
•
Oil
- 2 ½ teaspoons
Ingredients For Seasoning
•
Mustard seeds
- ½ teaspoon
•
Black gram dal
- 1 teaspoon
•
Curry leaves
- 1 sprig
Ingredients For Masala
•
Dhania
- 2 teaspoons
•
Black gram dal
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Bengal gram dal
- 1 tablespoon
•
Red chillies
- 7
•
Coconut (grated)
- ¼ cup
Method To Prepare Masala
1.
Heat
a teaspoon of
oil
,
fry
the
masala
ingredients
till golden brown,
remove
from fire and
grind
with ¼ cup of fresh grated
coconut
. (Dry
coconut
also can be used)
Method
1.
Scrape
the skin from
potatoes
and
dice
it into one inch cubes.
2.
Wash
the
dal
and
keep
the
potatoes
and
dal
with just enough
water
to
cover
in a vessel and pressure
cook
till first whistle comes.
3.
Soak
tamarind
and extract a thick pulp from it.
4.
Mix
the
ground paste
,
tamarind
extract,
salt
and
jaggery
with boiled
potato
,
dal
mixture
with enough
water
and
boil
in a medium flame, taking care to
stir
in between.
5. When the gravy becomes thick enough,
pour
the fried
seasoning
on top and garnish with
curry leaves
.
6.
Mix
well and
serve
with rice dosas.
