Ingredients

Onions (small, peeled)
- 1 cup

Thuar dal
- ½ cup
•
Tamarind
- lime size
•
Tomatoes

Green chillies

Salt
- as required

Oil
- 2 teaspoons

Coriander leaves
- a little
•
Curry leaves
- 1 sprig
Ingredients For Seasoning
•
Mustard seeds
- ½ teaspoon
•
Asafoetida powder
- a pinch
Ingredients For Masala
•
Dhania
- 2 ½ teaspoons
•
Black gram dal
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Cumin seeds
- ½ teaspoon
•
Bengal gram dal
- 2 teaspoons
•
Red chillies
- 8
•
Fenugreek
- a pinch
•
Coconut (fresh, grated)
- ¼ cup
Method To Prepare Masala
1.
Heat
a teaspoon of
oil
and
fry
the above
ingredients
until golden.
2.
Fry
1
onion
and 1
tomato
with little
oil
separately.
3.
Grind
everything with ¼ cup of grated fresh
coconut
and 1 Tablespoon of roasted
gram
.
Method
1.
Heat
oil
in a shallow pan and
fry
the small
onion
for 1 or 2 minutes.
2.
Add
enough
water
and
boil
it till soft.
3.
Cook
red
gram
dal
in pressure cooker and
mash
well.
4.
Soak
tamarind
, and extract.
5.
Mix
cooked
onions
, mashed
dal
,
tamarind
extract
ground paste
with enough
salt
, slit
green chillies
,
cut
tomatoes
, and
boil
with enough
water
added to it.
6. When the sambar is thick enough,
remove
from fire.
7.
Heat
one teaspoon of
oil
,
add
mustard seeds
to splutter,
pour
over sambar with little
asafoetida powder
.
8. Garnish with
cut
coriander leaves
and
curry leaves
.
