Chana Dal Mutton

Ingredients
•
Mutton (assorted cuts)
- 500 grams
•
Channa dal (soaked)
- ¾ cup
•
Oil
- 4 tablespoons
•
Onions (chopped finely)
- 3
•
Ginger paste
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Garlic paste
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Haldis/Turmeric powder
- ¼ teaspoon
•
Chilly powder
- 1 teaspoon
•
Jeera powder/Cumin powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Dhania powder/Coriander powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons
•
Tomatoes (finely chopped)
- 3
•
Tomato puree
- 3 tablespoons
•
Salt
- as required
•
Curry leaves
- 3 sprigs
•
Whole red chillies (dry)
- 6
•
Garam masala
- 1 teaspoon
•
Coriander leaves (fresh, for garnishing)

Method
1.
Boil
channa dal
in 2½ cups of
water
until soft.
2.
Mash
slightly and
keep
aside.
3.
Heat
oil
in a heavy bottomed pan.
Fry
the
curry leaves
and the
whole red chillies
for 1 minute.
4.
Drain
and
keep
aside.
5.
Add
onions
to the hot
oil
.
Fry
till golden brown.
6.
Add
the
ginger
and
garlic pastes
and
cook
for 2-3 minutes.
7.
Add
the
chilly powder
,
haldi
,
jeera powder
,
dhania powder
and the
mutton
pieces.
8.
Roast
the
meat
until nicely browned.
9.
Add
the chopped
tomatoes
,
tomato puree
and ½ cup of
water
.
10. Bring to a
boil
,
cover
and
simmer
till just tender.
11.
Add
the mashed
dal
.
12.
Cook
on medium
heat
,
stirring
occasionally until
mutton
is cooked and the sauce is quite thick.
13.
Add
the fried
curry leaves
and
whole red chillies
.
14. Garnish with
garam masala
and
coriander leaves
.
15.
Serve
hot with boiled rice or rotis.
