Ven Pongal

Ingredients

• • Rice - 1 cup
• • Green gram dal - ½ cup
• • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
• • Black pepper - 1 ½ teaspoons
• • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
• • Salt - as required
• • Water - 5 cups
• • Cashew nuts (broken) - 1 tablespoon
• • Ginger (finely cut) - 1 tablespoon (optional)
• • Curry leaves - few

Method

• 1. Wash rice and dal together and pour five cups of water.
• 2. Pressure cook for 10 minutes.
• 3. After removing the lid, add salt, curry leaves, ginger with half a cup of milk.
• 4. Fry cashew nuts, pepper and cumin seeds in ghee.
• 5. Pour over pongal, mix well and serve steaming hot with ghee on top.

Note

• • Reduce the volume of water if you are cooking directly in pressure cooker.
• • Reduce flame after keeping the weight.
• • Do not soak rice.
