Green Gram Dal Sambar

Ingredients

• • Green gram dal - 2 tablespoons
• • Sambar onions - ½ cup
• • Green chillies - 3
• • Tomatoes - 2
• • Tamarind extract (thick) - 2 tablespoons
• • Turmeric powder - ¼ teaspoon
• • Sambar powder - 2 teaspoons
• • Salt - as required
• • Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Ingredients For Seasoning

• • Mustard seeds - ½ teaspoon
• • Black gram dal - 1 teaspoon
• • Bengal gram dal - 1 teaspoon

Method

• 1. Pressure cook dal till one whistle sound.
• 2. Chop tomatoes.
• 3. Peel small onions.
• 4. Slit green chillies.
• 5. Fry green chillies, onions and tomatoes in oil.
• 6. Add cooked dal, salt, sambar powder, tamarind extract with enough water.
• 7. Boil till thick.
• 8. In little oil tamper mustard seeds, black gram dal and bengal gram dal.
• 9. Pour over sambar and garnish with curry leaves.

Note - Variations

• • Use whole green gram in place of dal. Soak in water for 10 hours. Pressure cook, mash little and do the sambar.
